West White Rose
Project management, marine design, procurement, and execution of float-up, float-out of dock, towing and installation of a 200,000-tonne concrete gravity structure offshore Newfoundland.
Early marine involvement during design and construction optimised installation planning and reduced costs, through modelling, simulation and operational improvements. Well-managed interfaces with solid ballast installation and the heavy-lift contractor were also significant to the success of the project.

The West White Rose field development required the transport and installation of a large concrete gravity structure offshore Newfoundland. Float-up, float-out, towing and installation operations all had to be executed safely while managing cost, schedule and operational risk.
Aker Solutions provided marine operations support from planning through execution, including:
- project management
- engineering
- regulatory support
- procurement
- project controls and
- offshore execution
We developed temporary ballast and mooring systems, towing arrangements, float-out solutions and station-keeping systems. Through model testing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and marine simulations, we optimised the transport route, vessel strategy and operational approach in collaboration with the client and the marine warranty surveyor.
With early involvement in the construction project, the team was able to improve the design, detailed engineering and planning, ensuring safe and efficient execution from construction to offshore installation.
The project benefited from improved operational planning, enhanced control during transport and installation, and execution solutions tailored to the specific challenges of the structure and site.
The West White Rose structure was installed within 15 cm of the target, on time and within budget.
